Sew Your Own Bra! Simplicity releases the 8339 pattern, 30A-44G

I have previously written on the availability of sewing patterns for people who have a smaller or larger bust and have difficulty finding tops and dresses that fit. Major brand sewing patterns*** provide straight size women with patterns for A-D dress cup sizes (in the case of Butterick, McCall's, and Simplicity) and B-DD dress cup sizes (in the case of Simplicity). Cashmerette provides plus size women with patterns for C-H dress cup sizes.

But what about those of us who want to sew our own bras? It's nice and all to have a closet full of tops and dresses that fit our bust, but for sewing-minded people in the bra-fitting community often lack easily-available sewing patterns in non-matrix sizes.

In comes Simplicity (of all brands) to the rescue! I don't typically expect a major brand to release such a pattern, but the 8339 Misses' Knit Sports Bras comes in sizes 30A-44G! As Simplicity is a US brand, they use inconsistent sizing nomenclature. Their sizing goes like: A, B, C, D, DD, E, F, and G so their G cup corresponds to a UK FF cup. I am super excited to sew this pattern in 30D. If you're looking for a sports bra that actually comes in your size, maybe try sewing this one and see how it turns out!

***Major brand sewing patterns include: Butterick, McCall's, Simplicity, and Vogue

Nordstrom now carries Honeydew Intimates in store! 30B-36DD!

Nordstrom is a great resource for those of us who want to shop in-store for bras outside of the matrix. In addition to Dillard's and independently owned lingerie stores, Nordstrom offers a considerable selection of bras in non matrix sizes. It is especially notable for its collection of Betsey Johnson bras, which come in 30B-E, 32A-34F, and 36A-E. After boycotting Nordstrom for the last few months (https://grabyourwallet.org/), I have decided to return to shopping there just in time to find a pleasant surprise. Honeydew Intimates is a relatively unknown brand and Nordstrom has been carrying their bras in store as of late. They come in matrix sizes (32A-36DD) but they also offer 30B-30DD! This great news for us gals who need non-matrix sizes. Their aesthetic is youthful and cute, much like Betsey Johnson, b.tempt'd, Aerie, Cleo, and Curvy Kate. They have a mix of wired and non-wired bras. The wired styles are all moulded, some push-up, some non-pushup.

I tried a bunch of their bras in 30D, so let's take a look at some of them:

Skinz Underwire T-shirt Bra - felt somewhat small in the cups, was very immediately shallow, I quadded out of the top edges of the cups. This bra would be good if you have a very shallow shape.

Skinz Underwire Push-up Bra - standard moulded push-up bra. Works for shallow and broad rooted shapes. I quadded out of the top edges again, might run a bit small in the cups.

Camellia Underwire Balconette Bra - this one is a similar fit to the Betsey Johnson Starlet Lace. The band is noticeably tighter than other Honeydew bras. It feels like a Gossard 30 band honestly. If your snug underbust measurement is 28" or under, this might be a good one for you. It is a tad bit shallow for me at the bottom parts of the cups. Again, I quadded out of the top edges.

Conclusion: Honeydew Intimates is a good brand if you have a very shallow, and classically broad rooted shape that is common amongst people with small breasts. It is too shallow for me, but my shape isn't extremely shallow. Their bras might all run a bit small in overall cup volume. If you are in between cup sizes, size up.

Victoria's Secret now carries regular bras in 30A-C!

Victoria's Secret has been long maligned for having a low selection of bra sizes and dubious business practices. For some reason, America's largest retailer of lingerie insisted on only carrying sizes 32A-38E (marketed as 38DDD) . Many of us in the bra-fitting community suspect that they did this because they put profit margins over customer satisfaction. For the last couple of years they have been carrying sizes 30A-B in their Pink division, which caters primarily to girls and young women ages 15-22.

I just noticed that this season VS now carries sizes 30A-C in their regular division! Even though I am just barely sized out of their new expanded size range, I am glad they are finally beginning to see that there are many women out there who need 30 band bras. If you need 30 band bras in cup letters D+ I highly recommend that you contact VS, tell them they are doing a great job carrying sizes 30A-C, and that they'd do even better if they offered 30D+.

If you do need a size in the 30A-C range, check out my picks:

Bombshell Add-2-Cups Push-Up Bra - comes in all sorts of colors, gives you incredible cleavage that other 30 band bras just don't give. Not an everyday bra but perfect for special events.

Very Sexy Multi-Way Bra - If you're looking for a strapless or multi-way bra that fits your shape, it can be hard to find. Most strapless bras available at major retailers don't go below a 32 band so this one is worth a try.

Dream Angels Multi-Way Bra - Does not appear to be as open at the top edges of the cups as the Very Sexy Multi-Way but still worth a try, especially if your shape is FOB and/or short rooted.

So there you have it, my picks for Victoria's Secret 30A-C bras. Question for my readers: Does anyone know if these bras are available for sale in store, or are they available online only?

Thanks for reading! XOXO

Etain Retail Store Review

Etain is is a small, independently owned retailer of lingerie, underwear, sleepwear, and loungewear. It is located in Portland, ME.

When I first walked in, the salesperson greeted me and asked me if I was looking for anything in particular. I asked to try out some bras by Fortnight, Lonely Lingerie, Claudette, and Tutti Rouge.

Their selection of bras is really good for a small store. Etain is only about as large as Forty Winks yet the size selection and the brand selection are phenomenal. They carry styles in 28A-D, 30A-38G, and 40A-42DD. The main size range was 30A-38G though so the selection of 28, 40, and 42 band bras was a bit sparse. I'm not complaining though since the core size range that they offer is great. The brands they offer include TLBC, Fortnight, Lonely Lingerie, Lilipiache, Gossard, Claudette, Tutti Rouge, Panache, and Curvy Kate.

The Fortnight selection was standard: a collection of Miras, Vegas, and Lunas, all fitting the way Fortnight bras ought to fit which means true to size. I found out here that Lonely Lingerie isn't what it's all cracked up to be; the salesperson said they tend to run 1 cup volume large...I found that all the Lonely Lingerie styles I tried did indeed run 1 cup volume large, except for 1 style which ran 1 cup volume small. In short, I do not recommend Lonely Lingerie. I did try a wonderful bra by the indie brand Lilipiache; it was a beatiful bralette and I look forward to seeing more offerings from this brand.

Prices at this store varied a lot: anywhere from $20 to $110.

Verdict: 5/5

Petite Menstrual Pads! What to do if regular sized pads are too big!

Petite bloggers often talk about shopping for clothes that fit. Small bust, full bust and full figure bloggers often talk about shopping for bras that fit. But what about getting menstrual pads that fit? I have often wondered if I am the only petite woman out there who has searched for pads tailored for my small frame. I have long been using Always Slender but it was time for me to branch out and see what else is out there. I bought a package of each of these four brands during my last period and will review them based on three metrics: size, comfort, and absorbency. Here are my findings:

Always Slender - I have been using this brand since I was a young teen. The size of the pad is definitely better than most "regular sized" pads. The length and width are pretty good considering that regular sized pads are often too wide to fit on an XS panty. The wings are a bit big though. Absorbency is fine; I have light flow so maximum absorbency is not necessary for me. It is less comfortable than two of the other brands though.

Kotex Tween - Marketed towards young girls aged 10-12, this is a pretty good buy for adult women with petite frames. The size of this pad is probably the best of the bunch. The width is small enough to fit on an XS panty (all four of the pad brands in this review met this criterion) and the short length is the best of the bunch. The wings are the smallest and thus the best. It is very absorbent; probably the (very close) second most absorbent pad of the bunch. Comfort-wise, it is also comes in at a very close second.

Always Teen - Marketed towards girls and young women 13-19. The size of this pad is the worst of the bunch. Even though all four brands have the correct width to fit on my tiny sized undies, this brand is the longest and has the largest wings. However, Always Teen pads make up for their atrocious size by being the most absorbent and comfortable of the bunch. I say dry all day, and zero leakage. Even if you have heavy flow this pad can probably take it.

CVS Petites - The only brand of the four that is marketed entirely towards petite adult women rather than young girls, these pads look and feel similar to Always Slender. Length is alright, width is good, wings are a bit big. Absorbency is fine for me; if you have medium to heavy flow go with Kotex Tween. If you have really heavy flow go with Always Teen. Comfort is similar to Always Slender.

Here is a handy chart of the above information in condensed form:

Verdict: Always Slender and CVS Petites each get ratings of 52% from me. Kotex Tween and Always Teen blow the competition out of the water with 90% and 83% ratings respectively. If you're looking for comfort and absorbency, go with Always Teen. If you're looking for the most physically petite pad (small width, small length, AND small wings), go with Kotex Tween.
